If you’re like me, the music you listen to tells a story about you. You might like all kinds of music or just one type with no others considered. Not that any of these options are good, bad, or indifferent. One person might describe someone who listens to only one kind of music as narrow-minded and unspontaneous, while someone else might call them passionate and focused. Someone who listens to all kinds of music might be considered by some as open-minded and all-loving, while others might consider them to be scattered and lacking direction. And none of this should matter to you at all. The music that you listen to is your comfort zone and no one else’s. Oh sure, when you find someone else with similar musical tastes, it’s usually an attractant. But ultimately, your story is your own. We live in a world where too often, we’re trying to follow others. Be part of the “in” crowd at that time. Observe other people’s lives too much rather than focus on creating your own. (Is it any mystery that reality television is so popular?)
That’s why one of the inventions of modern music players is so fascinating to me. The shuffle mode. Tired of the song or tracks that you’ve been listening to over and over again until you, your spouse, partner, friend, neighbor, or even your carpool-mates are ready to throw your MP3 player out the window? Hit the shuffle mode. Ahhh, I haven’t heard of THAT in ages. Wow, I forgot I had THAT. Man, I’m weird. Or most likely – Man, I’m pretty cool. Every once in a while when I’m feeling like I need a boost, I’ll hit shuffle and just smile. Or raise the roof. Or just lay back and relax a little. I clicked shuffle this morning and was really pleased by the sequence that appeared. But although you might like to listen to these as well (hey, that IS what this weekly post is normally about), I invite you to go and create your own shuffle list today. And remind yourself what’s cool about just being you. Fortunately, it probably has absolutely nothing to do with the Real Housewives of Peoria. And that’s a good thing. Have a terrific shuffling weekend everyone.
