This week I’ve been obsessed with slide guitar. Maybe it’s because I finally gave up trying to play guitar right-handed (I’m a natural southpaw), and traded a friend a computer for a nice Epiphone Les Paul lefty. There’s something about hearing that slide moan up and down the musical scale that seems so natural. First of all, as much as seasoned guitarists want to say it’s easier to play than traditional chord-style, it still ain’t that easy. Index finger, middle finger, or pinky? Metal or glass slide? Blues purists swear by bone. I heard one gal talk about accidentally breaking her glass slide before a gig, and using (well, I might add) a lipstick tube for a slide as a last resort. Either way, while I figure out what the heck I’m doing with all this, take a listen to some great artists who really know what they’re doing with slide guitar. Most of them could play slide with a beer bottle or a rolled up newspaper and it would sound good. Enjoy the heck out of Super Bowl weekend, eat a lot of barbecue, debate the merits of those overpriced commercials, and GO NINERS!!
